How to Redesign Your Website Without Losing SEO Rankings
By the Luke team · 27 October 2026
A redesign is an opportunity to grow — but it's also the moment many businesses lose years of search visibility overnight. The good news: ranking drops after a redesign are almost always preventable with a disciplined migration process.
Step 1: Benchmark before you touch anything
Record your current performance: organic traffic, top landing pages, ranking keywords and conversions from Google Search Console and analytics. Without a baseline, you can't tell whether the new site improved or harmed things.
Step 2: Crawl and inventory every URL
Use a crawler to list every page, image and file on the current site, along with titles, descriptions and headings. Pages that receive traffic or backlinks are your priority assets.
Step 3: Map old URLs to new URLs
Create a spreadsheet mapping each old URL to its closest new equivalent. Avoid redirecting everything to the homepage — Google treats that like a missing page. Where possible, keep URLs that already rank.
Step 4: Preserve and improve ranking content
A common mistake is shortening or removing content to make the design cleaner. If a page ranks, its content is part of why. Keep the substance, improve its structure and add what's missing rather than cutting it.
Step 5: Rebuild technical SEO on the new site
Before launch, check that each page has a unique title and meta description, one clear H1, canonical tags, structured data, an XML sitemap and a correct robots.txt. Make sure the staging site was blocked from indexing and the live site isn't.
- Unique titles and descriptions
- 301 redirects tested
- XML sitemap submitted to Search Console
- Robots.txt allows crawling
- Internal links updated to new URLs
- Page speed checked on mobile
Step 6: Launch, then monitor closely
After launch, submit the new sitemap, watch Search Console for crawl errors and 404s, and compare traffic against your baseline weekly. Small fluctuations are normal; sustained drops on specific pages usually point to a missing redirect or removed content.
Key takeaway
Benchmark, map every URL, keep ranking content, rebuild technical SEO and monitor after launch. Done properly, a redesign should grow your rankings rather than reset them.
